Disclaimer: This is just our favourite way to grow magic mushrooms. There are loads of different guides and methods out there, and no single way is the “right” one. Feel free to experiment and find the style that works best for you!

Step 1: Prepare a Super Sterile Workspace

Action: Disinfect all surfaces thoroughly, wash your hands up to your elbows, and wear sterile gloves and a face mask. Make sure the room is clean, calm, and free of dust and drafts.

Explanation: Cleanliness is essential to avoid contamination from bacteria or mold, which could ruin the growth. Copelandia is even more sensitive than cubensis, so a sterile environment is critical for success.

Step 2: Apply the Casing Layer (Soil)

Action: Carefully open the grow kit and spread the casing soil (provided in a separate tub) evenly across the surface of the substrate. Do not press down — the layer should stay light and airy. Lightly mist the casing with clean water if it looks dry.

Explanation: The casing layer mimics the mushroom’s natural environment, holding moisture and stimulating the formation of mushroom pins (small mushroom growths). It acts as a protective blanket, helping to maintain the perfect humidity at the surface.

Step 3: Create a Humid Environment

Action: Place the grow kit inside the provided grow bag. Take a spray bottle filled with clean water and lightly spray the inside walls of the bag — but never spray directly onto the kit. Fold over the end of the bag, making sure enough air is trapped inside, and close it using the paper clips provided. Open the bag only when the walls have dried out and briefly mist them again.

Explanation: Mushrooms require high humidity to thrive, as it mimics their natural environment. Too little humidity will dry them out, and too much direct moisture can lead to contamination.

Step 4: Control Temperature, Fresh Air, and Light

Action: Keep the temperature between 24–26°C (75–79°F). If you’re using a heat mat, make sure the kit doesn’t sit directly on the mat. Allow fresh air exchange by opening the bag for a few minutes once or twice a day. Place the kit in a spot where it receives 12 hours of indirect daylight or soft artificial light daily. Avoid direct sunlight.

Explanation: Copelandia grows best in warm, stable temperatures with regular fresh air. Light signals the mycelium that it’s time to fruit. Fresh air exchange is essential because mushrooms breathe oxygen just like us!

Step 5: Monitor Growth Carefully

Action: Over the next 2 to 4 weeks, you’ll start to see tiny pins (baby mushrooms) forming through the casing layer. As soon as you see pins, open the bag slightly to increase fresh air exchange while keeping humidity high.

Explanation: This is the exciting part! Healthy mycelium should appear bright white. Watch for tiny, white or brownish bumps (pins) as the first sign of mushrooms forming.

Step 6: Harvest the First Flush

Action: When the mushrooms are fully grown and the caps begin to open slightly (but before they open completely), cut them carefully at the base of the stems or gently twist and pull them out. Avoid damaging the casing layer.

Explanation: Mushrooms are ready to harvest when the veil under the caps starts to stretch or tear. Harvesting at the right moment preserves the energy of the mycelium for future flushes. The cut part of the stem may turn blue, which is oxidation and a sign of healthy mushrooms.

Tip: If you choose to twist and pull, be gentle. Disturbing the substrate too much can harm future flushes.

Step 7: Prepare for Second, Third, or Fourth Flush

Action: After harvesting, lightly mist the casing layer again to rehydrate it if needed. Keep following the same steps for humidity, fresh air, and temperature. A second flush should appear after about 1–2 weeks.

Explanation: Rehydrating and maintaining the right environment encourages your mycelium to keep producing mushrooms. Unlike cubensis, Copelandia usually doesn’t require another soak — just misting and care between flushes.
